Traditional or ‘3-event skiing' competitive water skiing consists of slalom, trick and jump events.

•  In slalom competition, skiers complete a course of six buoys. Slalom scores are given as number of buoys completed at a given rope length.

•  In Trick competition, skiers use a special trick ski and have two passes of 20 seconds each to complete as many tricks as possible. Each trick completed wins a certain number of points, from a basic back slide (20 points) to the backward double flip (1000 points).

•  In Jump competition, skiers launch off a 1.8 metre high ramp and soar into the air. Each jumper gets three attempts per round to achieve the greatest distance.
